Mike and Amy Finders and Aaron and Erin Youngberg are two married couples playing original bluegrass, country, and folk with a grin and snarl, merging styles, songs, voices and grooves in an interplay that is exhilarating, gratifying, and often hilarious. They are young veterans of the folk and bluegrass circles, and play banjo, harmonica, bass, mandolin, pedal steel, and guitar, while they sing new songs and tell new stories. They first met in Chicago in 2005. The Iowa-based Mike and Amy were touring with their band and ran into Aaron and Erin. They continued to hook up for shows in Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska. In 2008, amidst continued work with their other bands (Mike and Amy Finders Band and the Billy Pilgrims), the four decided to make an album together, "Keep Your Suitcase Packed". It features songs by Mike Finders and Erin Youngberg, Amy Finders' much-lauded vocalizing, and the rock-steady banjo and steel of Aaron Youngberg. Material on the CD weaves through relationship themes (no surprise with a double-couple band), tales of older times, a few songs about Iowa and Colorado, while the band keeps orchestration simple and intimate. Since then, the Finders have relocated to Fort Collins, CO, joining the Youngbergs, and the four have been busy touring Colorado and the Midwest, including shows at the Iowa Arts Festival in Iowa City, IA, and the Boulder Theatre, Boulder, Colorado. Their CD continues to gain airplay on regional and nationally syndicated radio programs. Aaron Youngberg plays banjo, pedal steel and sings. He engineered, produced and mixed "Keep Your Suitcase Packed," at his own Swingfingers Studios in Fort Collins, CO. There he records and produces bluegrass and roots music for independent artists such as Jeff and Vida, Lonesome Traveler Bluegrass Band and many others. Amy Finders sings and plays mandolin. She has a "spunky, charming personality and a powerful, soulful voice that can go from the effervescent, clearwater high-country sound of, say, Dolly Parton, to the sultry, sassy, swinging blues of a young Maria Muldaur." She's a certified web-site developer and manages all websites for Neighborly Music, Mike and Amy's company. She's the mother of two daughters, Emma (9) and Clara (8) who keep her happy and tired. Erin Youngberg plays the bass, sings and writes songs. Though the youngest, she's the most experienced bluegrass player of the group, starting in Wyoming bars at age 9, playing bass in her daddy's bluegrass band. She's a staple of the Northern Colorado roots music scene. Mike Finders plays guitar, harmonica, sings, and writes songs. He's won the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest at Merlefest twice. He's been making up his own songs since he was six. A licensed special education teacher, Mike recently founded Folk Music Education, a program that combines folk music, American History and creativity for elementary and high school students. He and Amy have two daughters who play bluegrass, old-time and AC/DC. |
"These two couples have chemistry! It is somewhat rare for a group who hasn't been performing together that long to be able to sound like they read each other's musical minds. Their wonderful blending of influences is a testament to the strong bonds music can forge." - Andrea Bradstreet, Rocky Mountain Breakdown, KRFC, Fort Collins, CO |
"Excellent songwriting melds with the superb musical sensibilities of the four musicians in this group to create these truly remarkable songs. This album has some bluegrass on it, but it's more eclectic than that--drawing upon folk, blues and country. I want to make it crystal clear: this pair of couples is phenomenal together!" - Jan Peterson, Pow'r Pickin', Colorado Bluegrass Music Society |
"Amy Finders boasts one of the most pneumatic, acrobatic and infinitely personal vocal deliveries in recent folk/bluegrass history." - Jim Musser, Iowa City Press Citizen and No Depression |
